If you plan on purchasing and carrying a concealed firearm. Here are 3 very important things you need to know!
1. Know the Legal Guidelines
Get your Permit (If your state requires one)
The sooner you apply for the permit the sooner you get one!
Don’t get caught carrying without a permit. It can prevent you from obtaining a permit in the future.
If you already have a permit, keep it on you at all times!
Know your Restrictions
Do your research, if you must travel, know in advance if your permit is recognized by the county/state that you may be traveling to. They are not universal.
Know your jurisdiction so you can either, upgrade your permit to a more widely-recognized certification or (not the best scenario) leave it at home. Locked. Securely.
Can you Fight Back?
Don’t stop there. You have the permit. You know your restrictions. Now, know your self-defense guidelines.
Find out if your state has escalation of force or use of deadly force laws. Some states are not as firearm friendly as others.
While some states have a 2nd Amendment supportive “Stand Your Ground” law, some may not.
If possible, learn self-defense and hand-to-hand combat as well. It can sometimes provide a quicker resolution to a potential conflict without having to draw your firearm.
In addition, have a plan for what happens if you do have to defend your life with force. Have you researched good attorneys in your town with any experience in the CCW field? Do you know what to say to police officers after a self-defense situation (most lawyers advise saying nothing at all)?
2. Get a Good Holster
Okay, now you have a gun, or an idea of what you want. Next you have to choose an appropriate holster. There are many holsters on the market for concealed carry.
Please don’t stash your gun in your waistband without a holster. It’s insanely irresponsible! The trigger can be activated through your pants.
It can and has happened. Documented cases are easy to find of accidental discharges from this carry style. People HAVE DIED from these accidental discharges.
Find a Comfortable & Effective Carry Method
There are multiple positions on the body, that can accommodate a concealed firearm and holster.
- Appendix (1-2 o’ clock)- Effective for rapid draw, not the most comfortable when seated.
- Straight Hip (3 o’clock)- This spot is effective for Outside-the-Waistband carry.
- Behind the Hip (4-5 o’clock)- Most common. It’s very easy to conceal a gun in this position.
- Small of Back (6 o’clock)- Not recommended. Falling on a pistol in this position can break your spine.
- Cross-Body (10-11 o’clock)- Not too popular.
- Pocket Carry– This method works for just grabbing a pocket sized gun on your way out the door. It’s a little slower to draw but very convenient.
It’s important to try different carry styles until you find one that works best for you.
The more you carry, the more comfortable and confident you’ll get with it.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice
Instances that require you to pull your handgun are extremely stressful. Fight or flight instincts take over.
In these situations, you don’t have time to think logically. You have to react. Only training and muscle memory can reliably get you through a self-defense situation.
Practice drawing your weapon at least 5-10 times per day. You need to practice pulling your shirt up and out of the way with your weak hand while getting a good firing grip with your shooting hand.
Also practice at the range. Shot placement and accuracy is everything. It’s more important than caliber or any other factor involved.
Don’t forget the first rule to winning a gunfight: Have a gun!
Don’t let the one day that you are not carrying, be the day you need to be.
